What Is Your Superpower?

Superpower: an extraordinary ability that sets you apart.

My superpower? Turning chaos into order.

Back in late 2005, I temporarily closed my business and headed to southern Mississippi to volunteer with Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. By then, I’d been running my remodeling business for 8 years, and I’d faced my fair share of struggles keeping things organized and running smoothly. At the volunteer camp where I was living, I was put in charge of coordinating the rebuilding of homes. It was pure chaos. I was scrambling to line up projects for volunteers, figure out how to use the varying skill levels that showed up each week (if any!), and manage the overall disorder of it all.

One morning, I was venting about the chaos when something I read stopped me in my tracks. It said, "Don’t let chaos shape you. Instead, create order and fight to maintain it—and improve upon it daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly." That simple sentence shifted everything. It changed how we ran the rebuilding efforts, improved the experience for homeowners, and made volunteering more rewarding for those who came to help. Honestly, it changed my life. When I left Mississippi, I knew chaos was the enemy—and I had the tools to beat it.

Now, I ask you—what’s your superpower? Maybe it’s creating an incredible preconstruction experience for your clients; helping them design the remodel or home of their dreams. Maybe you’re a production powerhouse who can organize a crew and execute with precision. Whatever it is, lean into it. Everything you do—your advertising, your website, your Google reviews—should reflect that. There’s a client out there who will connect with your unique strength, and that’s what will draw them to you.

And don’t forget: your current and past clients already appreciate your superpower. Ask them to refer their “like-minded” friends. (That phrasing is key when asking for referrals.)

So, what’s your superpower? And how are you putting it to work? If you need help figuring that out—or amplifying it—I’m here to help.
